Poetry Contests, the National Library of Poetry, and Amateur Poetry Anthologies

Share this post:

One of my jobs as a digital reference specialist is to answer questions submitted through the Poetry and Literature Center’s Ask a Librarian form. The questions I receive tend to cluster around two or three major categories, such as how to find literary criticism on a novel and how to locate the full text of a poem without knowing its title and author. By far the most common question I receive, however, comes from people trying to find poems that they wrote, submitted to a poetry contest, and subsequently had published in a poetry anthology.

In almost every instance, the poems in question were published by an amateur, or vanity press, poetry publisher. These for-profit publishers, which have been extremely active since the 1980s, accept nearly every poem submitted to their contests for publication, and make money by encouraging winning poets to purchase copies of the anthologies in which their poems appear.

The Library of Congress has become a locus of questions about vanity press poetry publishers—receiving upwards of two-hundred inquiries per year—because many people mistakenly believe that the Library itself publishes and sells these anthologies. This misconception occurs for a number of reasons. First, the names of some amateur poetry publishers are quite similar to the Library of Congress. One of the largest amateur poetry publishers in the 1990s and 2000s was the National Library of Poetry, whose name is frequently confused with the Library of Congress, or, as many people refer to us, the “National Library of Congress.” Second, many of these publishers send emails and letters to winning poets that link their anthologies with the Library of Congress. Their correspondence sometimes notes that the anthologies will be submitted to the U.S. Copyright Office at the Library of Congress, or that the anthologies will be assigned a “number” by the Library of Congress. People often take this to mean that the Library of Congress will add the book to its permanent collections, or will assign it an ISBN number. The National Library of Poetry, in fact, printed ISBNs on its anthologies” copyright pages in such a way that people might assume the numbers were issued by or associated with the Library of Congress:

Copyright page of the National Library of Poetry anthology East of Sunrise.
Copyright page of the National Library of Poetry anthology East of Sunrise.

In practice, the Library rarely adds these books to its collections, and is not responsible for assigning ISBNs to books. Rather, what will usually happen is that the anthology will be registered with the Copyright Office and receive a copyright registration number.

To help people find poems they’ve had published by amateur poetry publishers, the Library has created an online guide to amateur poetry anthologies. The guide discusses the standard practices of these publishers, includes entries on dozens of active and inactive publishers, and offers tips on how to locate the anthologies through libraries and bookstores. If you’re looking for a poem that you, a family member, or a friend submitted to a contest or had published in a poetry anthology, please take a look at the guide and see if it helps with your search. Of course, we are happy to assist you directly as well: simply email your question to our Ask a Librarian service and we’ll do all we can to help you find your poem.

  5. I had several poems posted on the “National Library of Poetry” and/or poetry.com. There are several that were entered into contests, but the names of the two most remembered poems are:
“One and Only Jewel” and “A Single Bloom.” One or both of these poems were supposed to be published in “America at the Millinium: The Best Poems and Poets of the 20th Century.”
I have been to both sites listed above, several times, and tried to access my poems, but have been unable to do so. If you could help me, I would be ever so grateful. Thanking you in advance for your time and assistance.

  9. I think it was titled: “Shadows and Light”. Published by the National Library of Poetry. I think in about 1991/2. I don’t remember the title of the poem I submitted. But I do remember that I was nominated for “Poet of the Year”. And I gave permission for my work to be published. As well as giving additional permissions to have come, Soap Opera Personality, read my poem in front of some baroque music, to be recorded on audio tape. I was thinking, like, Cajun? Bar-B-Que? LOL.
Of course they wanted money too. Which I never gave, But, supposedly that didn’t change my chances of winning. Did anyone ever win that wasn’t affiliated with the company?

The last name would be Perkins. I can’t remember which given name I gave.
Can anything be found from the info. I just mentioned?

    Thank you,

  13. I want to thank you for this information as it was confusing to me when I was getting emails from them about being published. All they wanted was to have me send money to get the award and to be published.

I have a number of poems published through the National Library of Poetry. I, too, would like to know if they got into an anthology. Also, how do you see these anthologies?

Painful Knowledge and Come Talk to me were two of my poems. I thought I did another, but can’t remember.

I see you are helping amateur poets find submissions. I have a poem in the National Library of Poetry’s 1996 or ’97 anthology “Into the Unknown”. I purchased a copy as described in the above article and have since lost it. Would like to replace it but not with the blue hard copy offered by the female editor. I was also asked to resubmit my poem for the Millenium but didn’t even have the funds to buy the first book. I don’t know if this book of poetry has one Volume or 2. Please if you could send me some information of how I can obtain a copy of this book. And to inform me if it cost me anything for you to respond to these questions and answers? 20. I have recently sent a letter of request ot the NLP and I had it returned

Iwondered if someone could send me the latest address of this organization.

the National Library of Poetry as at 2014.

  21. I had a poem that I wrote and it was printed in a book called Tracing Shadows. I was told it would be in the National Library of Congress. If you wanted a copy of the book with your poem printed in it, you had to buy the book. That may be why some of you never got a book. I thought I would past that along to everyone. The book has thousands of poems in it and in the back, it has a bio about the person who wrote the poem. You had to give them permission to print that information if you wanted it featured in the year that your poem was written.

  22. my mother…wrote a lot of poems and sent them to you. my mother passed dec24 2012. we were looking through her papers and found one of your proof of the poems. it was called summer rain. she had one published i don’t know what year but i would like to have all the poems she sent you. do you keep them long? the one about summer rain has a date of dec 30 1994. is there any way you could send me her poems. thank you carol daniels.

  29. I submitted a poem, titled ‘Nature Walk’ in 1995, when I was 16 years old. I remember receiving a letter asking for permission for it to be published in the NLP anthology titled After the Storm – but my mother did not want it published as she felt it wasn’t fair to my siblings that they wouldn’t be recognized. I know….really unfortunate, right? I believe there was information about having it placed on a tape for people to listen to as well, some of the details are a little foggy. I have been trying to locate my poem ever since but I am fearful that the floppy disk it was stored on at the time has since been destroyed. I purchased After the Storm back in 2005 to see if it had been published but couldn’t locate it but I’m not surprised as my mother admitted a few years ago that she lied when she told me she sent in the release form. Could you please check the archives for my poem, Nature Walk. Thank you!

  43. Is there an actual valid website for the “National Library of Poetry” or are they no longer?

    • Dear Crystle,

The National Library of Poetry’s (NLP’s) official website was formerly Poetry.com. The NLP, which was part of a larger company (Watermark Media Group, Inc.), is no longer active, and no longer has an official website. That said, Poetry.com still remains an active website–it is now operated by the company Newton Rhymes, LLC. For additional information, you can take a look at our entry on the NLP in our online guide to amateur poetry anthologies.

  44. What happened to the national library of poetry in Owens mills, Md.? are they still in business? can they still be reached? I get a run around when I try to search them on the internet

    • Hi David,

The National Library of Poetry (NLP) is no longer in business, and consequently can no longer be reached. The NLP formerly ran the Poetry.com website, which is still active but is now operated by a different company, Newton Rhymes, LLC. For additional information, you can take a look at our entry on the NLP in our online guide to amateur poetry anthologies. If you have additional questions about the company, or need help locating a poem you submitted to the NLP, please feel free to contact me through our Poetry and Literature Center Ask a Librarian form and I’ll be happy to provide additional assistance.

  47. I entered 2 poems in a publishing contest back in 1993-94 and was told they would be in that years poetry book which I was unable to purchase at that time but I had every reason to believe it was an authentic reputable association as I believe they were still issuing new collections each year, but now all I can recall is that the name was along the lines of American Poetry Guild of America, and now I would like to see if my poems were really published and if so would I be able to purchase an issue from that far back?
I hope you will be able to help me, or at least direct me on the right path. An ex-friend of mine stole and plagerized many of my writings, one of which was one of the two that I believed to be copy protected because of it’s being published, and have always wondered ever since if I could have filed a law suit against her. None the less, it would be something to show for my life that I was always proud of.
Will be looking forward to your response. Thank you!

I remember being told it was published, but being a child I never followed through on getting a copy. Nor did they realize my age as they never asked for parental permission and sent me propaganda about getting children to write more.

All I have to go on is that the poem was titled “Red” and was published sometime with in 1990 – 1993 with my name as Jose E. Castillo.

  70. Mr. Dewey Wright submitted a poem to the National Library of Poetry contest and subsequently received an Editor’s Choice Award in 1994. His family is interested in securing a copy of that poem. Apparently his poem was recognized by the judges as being among the best 3% of all entries judged. Please let me know what I must do to have it sent to me, his brother-in-law. Mr. Wright is deceased and his wife, my sister, due to health issues, is unable to help with information regarding this poem. 71. I have lost touch with the national library of poetry: I wrote and you published two of my poems. The first was “Master Tree” the other one I had just written and don’t remember the name of it myself. However, both was published by you when entered in 1996 and 97. I have written so many poems over the years and stopped. I found my poems, recently and started reading and most of them are very good.

After, I’d read some and wrote a few, I realized “I still have my touch”. I want to re-establish myself with “The National Library of Poetry”, “International Society of Poets and “The International Poetry hall of fame”. Please, make this happen for me?

I loved you then and I love you now!

The answers is always the same.
    Why??

    • Dear Sandra,

I enter each poetry question received through the comments into the Library’s Ask a Librarian system, through which I then reply back to the questioner with more specific, personalized assistance. Providing full responses here would clog the comments thread and also potentially expose patrons’ personally identifiable information.

If you have a question, please feel free to reply to this comment or submit your question to me through the Poetry and Literature Center’s Ask a Librarian form.

  93. In 1992, I wrote and submitted a poem, The Brightest Star I See!,to the North American Open Poetry contest, which was organized by Elizabeth Barnes. I received a plaque for making the top 2% of the Editors Choice Award. I received an invitation to attend a ceremonial event in Maryland with John Denver as a special guest, who also wrote poetry. However, I could not attend, since I was serving in the active duty military at the time. My poem was later incorporated into a song published by Hilltop Records, who sent me a cassette tape of the recording. Supposedly, my poem was published in an anthology by the Library of Congress. The only word I remember in this anthology is ‘Cloud.’ How can I get a copy of this book, or the ISBN number? How can I possibly get confirmed information for this accomplishment in 1992? I’ve lost these documents over the years. Thank you kindly. Marvin L. Brown

  98. A poem of mine (“Days of Wonder”) appeared in an anthology (On The Threshold Of A Dream, vol. 3, 1992 – ISBN-10: 1561670375 – National Library of Poetry, Owings Mills, MD). After the poem was published, I learned that I had to pay (a lot) for a copy of the anthology. I decided to have nothing more to do with the press. Recently, however, I have been trying to locate a copy of the poem as it appeared in the anthology. I see that others are facing the same predicament. I also see that the Library of Congress lists a copy of the anthology in its holdings. Would it be possible to get a copy (digital) of the page on which the poem appears? (And possibly a copy of the anthology’s title page as well?) I would be happy to pay for this and/or make a small donation to the LofC. I would appreciate any suggestions or help that you can provide. Thank you and best wishes, Steven (Sher)

I’ve been trying to track down the book that has it published in it but the books I found did not have mine in it. 137. Hi! I’m trying to locate a poem I had published, last name Kirkpatrick at the time, roughly around 1999-2000. I can’t remember the name of the poem, or even the book it was published in, except I think I remember it being maroon and gold? My dad and I recently really started connecting and talking, and he asked to read my published poem. Problem is, I was 11-12 at the time, going through a really bad time in my life, and I don’t remember much from then. It’s really important to me that I do everything I can to find this poem since this is the first time he’s ever asked to read what I’ve written. Thank you.

  146. I have basically the same question that Helen Farina had asked which is, I sent a poem in 1994 and received a letter back asking me to initial it for accuracy. I was supposed to it back to 11419-10 Cronridge Drive post office box 704 Owings Mills, Maryland 21117 phone# (410) 356-2000 the date was September 29, 1994. I was only seventeen at the time and my Great Aunt had done all of the mailing stuff for me so years later I have come across the letter mentioned above. I am forty years old now and just wondering if my poem ever got published. There was a notation to put it in the sound of poetry it said it was a wonderful verse. The name of my poem was My Great-Grand Mother by Rocky H. Nichols. I would be most grateful if you could find out any information for me. Thank you.

I have sent in my poems to the old poetry.com for over 20 years first started out submitting them via the us mail system then online. I never in a million years thought all my work would vanish off the internet. Please please please help me locate my poems, they were written about my life, what I went through etc. After all the times I got a reward letting saying I was a finalist and my poem was being put in their books you’d think I’d at least be able to locate them. 164. In 1968-69, I entered a poetry contest while in high school. It was a national contest for high school age students. I think, but am not sure, that it was called the Golden Poetry contest. Regardless, they notified me that I was a co-winner of the contest for the state of Illinois. The title of my poem was “The Foxholes of Vietnam”. It was entered under the name of C.G. Messina. I was pretty proud of that accomplishment, but nothing other than a letter and a Golden Poet Award certificate was sent to me. Friends and acquaintances think I’m daft, so I am hoping you can help me to locate a copy of my poem. It supposedly was published in an anthology of high school poetry way back then. The only copy I had I gave to my mother as a gift and it has long since disappeared. Was I scammed even back then, 47 years ago?

  170. I wrote many poems on poetry.com between the years of 2001 and 2010. Only some of them were for contests and only those that were received notice that they were published in anthologies by the National Library of Poetry or whatever alias the website was using at that time.

Would it be possible for you to find these poems for me and send me the titles and texts of them or help me find a way to get them back? The website they were on no longer maintains archives that have me in them and appears to have changed hands at least twice.

I’m not asking for every poem back, just whatever ones you might be able to find in the anthologies if you can.

    My name is Daniel Coble.

  188. Greetings,
I’m trying to track down any leads anyone may have in regards to my intellectual property. I posted a poem up on a forum website in 2007 and someone from that site took said poem without my promisson and entered it in I don’t know what…. a contest or something, I’m not sure. I do know that it did manage to get published in a book because I got a e-mail notifying me of that fact.. I didn’t receive a copy of the book, and I was very ill at time ,so my priorities where channeled on said illness. The book could have been published between 2007- 2010 pen name Kalie or HeatherAmber. Or they could of used my real name, . It would just be nice to know what happened. Thanks for your time and consideration.
    Christina Wilson Browning

I remember her receiving multiple appreciation letters inviting her to Washington DC for a dinner as well as a reading. Also, it was outlined in those letters that her poems would be published in that years Book…etc. In spite of what I know I’ve been unsuccessful in my attempts to locate the books or the poems. I’m hoping that someone can help me in locating these. Thank you I’m advance for your time and consideration of this matter.

  249. Hello. Years ago while in High School between 1991 and 1995 my Girlfriend Angela Harding secretly submitted a poem that I wrote for her. I believe she submitted to The Mile High Poetry Society whom sent her a letter asking for permission for it to be published in a Book supposedly at The Library of Congress. I ordered a copy but never received it. I was wondering if you could help me locate it. I believe it was either titled “My Addiction” Or ” The Lady in White”. In the poem I compared a drug addiction that in the end actually was a love addiction to a specific girl. I used sentences that had double meanings. Please help me locate this. 281. Hello I contacted you and others in the past, I put most of my poems online in contests mainly poetry.com starting around 1998-99. They were copywritten etc and now my data/information/poems are no where to be found on the internet which I find extremely odd. I have my poems written down but I want to see them online that is the whole purpose of putting them on the site and to get them copywritten and published. These poems were about my life, my hardships sorrow and pain, torment and they mean a great deal to me and I’d like them to be made available online again. I can’t remember what I was told but pretty sure its the same thing as everyone else, you’ll be in touch if you find them but no one got back to me or found them :'(

  291. I won a contest for the young writers Association in 1985,1986 and 1987.
I was told it would be copyrighted and published great book
I went to federal hocking junior high in Stewart Ohio.
    My name is Stephanie Lynch

  292. I had a poem published in 2003 or 2004 after a poetry contest in 5th or 6th grade. I believe it was the students poetry anthology of 2004. The subject was something about a computer having a soul… The rest I can’t remember for the life of me. Frankly, I was so mad that the teacher “corrected” the poem and shortened it’s length that I ditched the book. Wish I never did that.

Anyway, if there is any way you could help me find that, I’d sure appreciate it.

I thought it was the international library of poetry but it could have been the National Library of poetry. I have wanted to get the book every since then or at least see what it looks like in the book or if it even exists. If you could help me I would really appreciate it. My last name was Rutherford at the time and the name of the poem was silly Pig and it was and inspirational children’s poem. It started out one day a silly pig made a silly Pig wish to jump into the ocean and swim just like a fish. The other pigs laugh to him and called him silly clown pigs cannot swim they said you silly fool you’ll drown…. And so on if you could find it I would really appreciate it

  329. I can tell you all, that this will go nowhere. Years ago, when my daughter was 12, she had her poem published in one of their books, and we even spent a lot of money to purchase the book of poems. However, in all the years since, we could never find the book published, displayed, or for sale anywhere. It is like it doesn’t really exist. If you just want your poem put in a book and you purchase it for your own keeping, then okay. But that is far as it will go. My daughter and I put a lot of time, effort and money into something that could never be seen or purchased by anyone else. Very sad indeed.

  330. Oh, and I also noticed that a lot of people are looking for copies of theirs, or a loved one’s book of poetry. And they always get the same response from someone named Peter, as shown below …

You will probably never hear from anyone on your book. I believe that when the poems are first submitted and accepted, they only print the books for those who pay for it in advance. Which is why you will not be able to find your book with your poem in it anywhere. If you are lucky, it may at some time be offered as a used book. good luck to you all.

    Cheers, Sharon

    • Dear Sharon,

This is Peter Armenti, author of the blog post. I am a reference librarian at the Library of Congress. The Library of Congress is not affiliated with any of the amateur poetry publishers or contests the post discusses. Many people, though, mistakenly think that the Library of Congress publishes or is affiliated with the anthologies issued by amateur poetry publishers and contact us seeking help locating their poems. I wrote the blog post to clarify the Library of Congress’s (lack of) connection to these contests and anthologies, and also to confirm that people can contact the Library to receive assistance trying to locate a poem published in one of these anthologies. We are not always able to locate the poem for which a person is looking–but we often can.

For anyone reading these comments, please rest assured that I review every comment this post receives. I add all questions into our Ask a Librarian system, which is the main system through which Library reference staff respond to online inquiries. When I reply to one of your comments on the blog saying that I will get back to you soon with a more complete response, that means I will be in touch with you within five business days. In my responses I provide as much help as I can with trying to track down the poem for which you are looking.

One final note: I strongly encourage anyone seeking help locating a poem to submit your question directly to our Ask a Librarian system instead of submitting it as a blog comment. I will see your question sooner and be able to send you a response more quickly if you use Ask a Librarian.

      Best,

      Peter

  334. Hello. I won a poetry competition at school when I was 12 (I’m 35 now).
If I remember correctly it was the year 2000. I cant remember what the book was called, but I’m sure it was an orange, hardback copy. I did have a copy of it but i have lost it.
My poem was called ‘freedom’. I went to Queen Elizabeth’s Girls School, in High Barnet, Hertfordshire.
I would love to locate this book again especially now I am a mother, it would be amazing to show my little boy, aswell as being something I’ve always been proud of. Can anyone help? I will happily purchase another copy, if one is available somewhere.

    Kind regards,

The poem won and award and I was asked to come to a western state to accept the award and a copy of my poem that was published in the book. I told them it would be impossible for me to travel that far to accept the award. I had a poem published in an anthology – I believe it was a student/ amateur’s competition.

I cannot now find the book I purchased where it was published. It would have been 1990s (I think) and I believe the poem was titled “The Sea of Tranquility” or something very similar.

Is there some way of locating this poem( and even possibly purchasing the book of poems)?

I didn’t necessarily want to buy the book unless I know it’s in there but if I don’t figure it out, I may just purchase anyways. My mom died in 2013 and none of my family members can remember. I am reaching out to see if anyone has the book that could look at it.

The poem is called “Child of mine” by Anna L. Hall.

When they sent my invitation and said they’d only cover my accommodation in Washington to read it onstage… I realized the err on my part. I came from a poor area and had no passport, so sadly declined. I had thought it was just a silly idea until I received a large envelope of paperwork to release the rights to have it published anyways and an offer to purchase the CD! lol It was called “A world like mine” (or possibly “what to do in…”) I can’t remember exactly, my apologies. Is it possible to find. None of my friends or family believes me! lol
