Every year, thousands of participants and hundreds of volunteers descend on the Washington Convention Center for the Library of Congress’ annual National Book Festival—and this year is no different! The 24th annual National Book Festival will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.on Saturday, August 24, 2024 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center (801 Allen Y. Lew Place, NW, Washington, D.C.). Doors open to the public at 8:30 a.m., and morning volunteer shift begins at 8:00 a.m. (with check-in at 7:30 a.m.). To learn more about this event, visit the Festival’s official website.

In the wee hours of festival day, there is palpable excitement in the air as the Washington Convention Center transforms into a book lover’s dream. That energy extends throughout the day, from author stages, book signings and family friendly activities on the expo floor to moderated talks featuring some of today’s most impactful writers and illustrators.

If you are enthusiastic about all things literary, we hope you’ll come join us for a day of literary appreciation and fun in one of the most important roles at the National Book Festival—as a volunteer! There’s a week left to apply. You can volunteer for a few hours, a half-day or even a full day. You’ll get training before the event, a National Book Festival T-shirt and a chance to help Festival attendees in a variety of roles in a dynamic and energetic environment.

Volunteering is open to anyone, even if you’re young as 16! Due to popular demand, the Library of Congress is offering a special teen volunteer opportunity again this year. Teens will assist in a variety of spaces, including the Story District, a story-telling and kid-friendly activity area, a corresponding STEM District, and Roadmap to Reading, which highlights books from each U.S. state and territory.

In order to volunteer, you’ll need to meet the criteria below:

  1. Be at least 16 years of age as of Saturday, August 24, 2024.
  2. Commit to at least one 4.5-hour shift at the Festival.
