How to Find the Best Events for YOU at the National Book Festival

This is a guest post by Nora Smolonsky, a 2024 Junior Fellow on the Literary Initiatives Team.

With a vast selection of 83 books featured at the 2024 National Book Festival, how can you find out which ones feature a topic you want to read about? Attendees can search the Festival schedule using keywords to make the most out of their day and discover books and authors they may not have otherwise encountered.

The Literary Initiatives team, including the Junior Fellows and interns, curated keywords to tag each session. There are 51 keywords festival attendees can use. These were created to provide insight into the content of the work and background of the authors—below are some useful examples:

The orange highlights the area on the schedule page where you can select multiple keywords under the “genre” option.

You asked and we delivered! Based on feedback from past festival attendees, we created the “Dragons” tag so you can search the Festival schedule to find events spotlighting everyone’s favorite scaly, flying, fire-breathing mythical creature.

In addition to tags describing the content and genre of each book, there are also keywords describing the identities of authors and characters represented in their work. Searching with the keyword “LGBTQ+” will allow attendees to discover all books written by openly LGBTQ+ authors or authors who represent that community in their work.

The “Science and Technology” keyword allows attendees to learn which events have content related to STEM. In addition to featuring books about science and technology, the STEM District area on the expo floor will bring science to life with live demonstrations. Searching the schedule with the keyword “Science and Technology” will provide attendees with every event in this category.

The Story District area on the expo floor will also feature children’s, middle grade and young adult authors presenting live readings from their books! Searching the schedule for “Story Readings” will allow you to plan your day around the live readings you and the young reader in your life are most excited for.

This year’s National Book Festival truly has something for everyone, and we hope you can find exactly what you’re looking for via our keyword filters. We can’t wait to see you for the Festival at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on August 24, 2024!

  1. I’m looking for activities for 18 month old toddles.

    • The best bet would \be the Story District and morning programming in Room 209, as those two areas have beanbags and lovely picture book stories!
