The Importance of Libraries: A Reflection by Native Writer Stephen Graham Jones

Share this post:

A quick but worthy post to remember last week’s wonderful native literature celebrations and simultaneously highlight “Spotlight on Native Writers” participant Stephen Graham Jones’s wonderful reflection on the value of books, libraries, and lifelong learning. Jones’s reflective guest blog post, in which he discusses his medley of jobs and what each have meant to him, is published on the Library Love Fest site (a feature part of the HarperCollins Library Marketing team) and can be found here.

Our “Spotlight on Native Writers” panel and reading featured writers Eric Gansworth, Linda LeGarde Grover, and Stephen Graham Jones, who discussed contemporary Native fiction and participated in a reading and panel moderated by Deborah Miranda. This event was co-sponsored by the PEN/Faulkner Foundation and preceded its evening program held just across the street at the Folger Theatre featuring a reading by Louise Erdrich. A Library webcast of the daytime reading/panel has yet to be released on the Library’s Webcasts website, but a few pictures of the event are below.

  1. Libraries are the intellectual and cultural centers of every city, town snd village in the world . They are the heartbeat of the communities in which they are located. A free public library stands as a bulwark against tyranny and are the cornerstone of freedom in America and around the world.
