Today, at 4 p.m., the Library of Congress will host the appointment ceremony of the sixth class of the National Student Poets, honoring five outstanding youth poets from across the United States for their original work. As ambassadors for poetry, it’s no surprise that they’ve received a good amount of press from local and national media outlets. Here’s a selection of the coverage they’ve received:
Annie Castillo, from Falls Church, VA, and representing the Southeast, spoke to her local ABC7News about her passion for poetry. Hailing from Laredo, TX, and representing the Southwest, Camila Sanmiguel told the local LMTonline, “I feel that poetry is inclusive and diverse, which is a defining characteristic of American pride.” Representing the West, Kinsale Hueston from Corona del Mar, CA, spoke with Indian Country Today about the intersection of her poetry and Navajo roots. Midwesterner Ben Lee, from Edina, MN, told KARE11 about the ways he uses poetry to “explain the unfamiliar things about parts of my life including childhood memories, my ethnicity and things like that.” An interview with Juliet Lubwama, from Downingtown, PA, and representing the Northeast, will air later this week with WHYY in Philadelphia.
