Prolific analyst and world renowned expert on terrorism Professor Gabriel Weimann will be speaking at the Library of Congress on Terrorism in Cyberspace: The Next Generation, which happens to also be the name of his upcoming book (October 2014 , Stanford University Press). Professor Weimann has been in the forefront of tracking terrorist movements “in the darkest alleys of cyberspace (Weimann, Terror on the Internet, 2006)” since the late 1990s. His recent research has brought attention to the fastest emerging form of terrorism- what has been coined the “lone wolf,” that is “a person who commits acts in support of some group, movement or ideology, but does so alone, outside of any command structure” (Weimann, Lone Wolves in Cyberspace, Journal in Terrorism Research, 2012).
Professor Weimann will speak at the Library of Congress on Tuesday April 1, 2014 at Noon in the Pickford Theater, 3rd floor, James Madison Building. This is a free public event and tickets are not required, although we expect a large turnout and we recommend that you plan on arriving early to assure a seat.
Gabriel Weimann is a full Professor of Communication at the Department of Communication at Haifa University in Israel and is currently a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. His research interests include the study of media effects, political campaigns, persuasion and influence, media and public opinion, modern terrorism and the mass media. He has authored eight books, including the fundamental work The Theater of Terror: Mass Media and International Terrorism (New York, Longman, c1994) and the ground-breaking Terror On the Internet: The New Arena, The New Challenges (Washington, D.C., Institute of Peace Press, 2006), many book chapters, and more than 160 papers. Professor Weimann has received numerous grants and awards from international foundations, including his most recent grant from the European Union to study terrorism and radicalism in cyberspace.
