Shortly after the passage in December 2016 of the groundbreaking, bipartisan 21st Century Cures Act, (aka “Cancer Moonshot” bill) proposed by then Vice President, Joe Biden, the Library of Congress hosted its inaugural panel discussion on the “Cancer Moonshot.”
Every year since then, the Library’s Health Services Division (HSD) and the Science, Technology & Business Division (ST&B) have hosted a panel discussion on the “Cancer Moonshot.” Due to continued concerns about Covid-19, this year’s panel will be held virtually. As in the past, HSO and ST&B hope the event will further promote communications between patients, clinicians and scientists on topics ranging from cancer diagnostics to treatment choices.
The focus of this year’s event is “Cancer Immunotherapy,” the artificial stimulation of the immune system to treat cancer, improving on the immune system’s natural ability to fight the disease. This is a good example of translational medicine, an application of the basic research of cancer immunology and the establishment of a new branch of oncology.
The program is open to everyone. Registration is required and is limited to 1,000 participants.
