Handwritten letter

bill-diary2

Caption:

The letter, which accompanied the diary, indicates that the diary was smuggled, and upon arrival in New York City, the soldier who was carrying the diary ‘thought it best to open the letter and keep the book loose in his pocket.’ He was able to keep the diary and deliver it to Bill’s wife. From the author’s personal collection. Photo by Nanette Gibbs.
