Speaker Biography: A former U.S. Ambassador to Austria, Swanee Hunt chairs the Washington-based Institute for Inclusive Security. She is the Eleanor Roosevelt Lecturer in Public Policy at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, CEO of Hunt Alternatives and a member of the U.S. Council on Foreign Relations.

DESCRIPTION: Elham Bakhtary investigated the lithographs’ literary influences and argued that the lithographs espoused a unique ethno-Islamic ideology that challenged the substance of Islamic revivalism in India, but also employed the latter’s technological and discursive methods in doing so. The lecture concluded with how this similarity suggests that ideas and print technology in South Asia traveled along similar itineraries in the 19th century.
Speaker Biography: Elham Bakhtary was a 2016-2017 CLIR/Mellon Fellow. He works in the Library of Congress Preservation Research and Testing Division and is a Ph.D candidate in history at George Washington University.

DESCRIPTION: Clyde Goulden and Robert McIntosh discussed the critical importance of science and the rule of law in protecting the integrity of Mongolia’s Lake Hovsgol National Park, one of the most beautiful and famous tourist destinations in Mongolia. Lake Hovsgol, the second largest lake in the nation, is called the Blue Pearl of Mongolia because of its crystal clear water. The area features unique flora and fauna, and is surrounded by traditional nomadic areas, all of which are affected by tourism and development. Gouldena and McIntosh have done more than 20 years of research into the area’s values, ecology, ethnography, biodiversity and traditional lifestyles.

DESCRIPTION: Brad S.Gregory discusses his new book, “Rebel in the Ranks: Martin Luther, the Reformation and the Conflicts That Continue to Shape Our World” as part of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.
Speaker Biography: Brad S. Gregory is one of the foremost American historians and authors of the Reformation and Christianity in the 16th and 17th centuries. He holds a Ph.D. from Princeton and additional degrees from the University of Arizona and the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. His work has been recognized with the Phi Alpha Theta Best First Book Award and the American Catholic Historical Association’s John Gilmary Shea Prize. Gregory is a professor of European history at the University of Notre Dame.

Williams discussed his book “The Reformer: How One Liberal Fought to Preempt The Russian Revolution.” Published on the centennial of the 1917 Russian Revolution, Williams’ book traces the life of reformer Vasily Maklakov and his efforts to develop the rule of law in Russia, both in institutions and civil society, in order to limit government arbitrariness.
Speaker Biography: Judge Stephen F. Williams practiced law in New York City, then taught at the University of Colorado Law School from 1969 to 1986 before being appointed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.
