Former Minister of Culture and current President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, H.E. Shaikha Mai bint Mohammed Al Khalifa will speak about the cultural strategy in the Kingdom of Bahrain, the challenges of building a sustainable cultural infrastructure and promoting cultural tourism. She will elaborate in particular on her “Investing in Culture” initiative, an active partnership between private and public sectors unprecedented in the region.

Display on the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi
The Embassy of India and the Asian Division of the Library of Congress invite you to a display on the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The Library continues to explore “America’s Changemakers” this year with a one-day event honoring the “Great Soul” of Mahatma Gandhi, on his 150th birth anniversary. This daylong display features items from multiple divisions throughout the Library of Congress, including a handwritten draft of the 1933 essay, “A Common Platform,” by Gandhi. Items highlighting Gandhi’s influence on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement in the United States will also be on display.

The Hispanic Division, Hispanic Cultural Society, and the Consortium of Latin American Studies Present: Author Francie Latour will read from “Auntie Luce’s Talking Paintings” (2019 Américas Award Honor Book), a story about a young American girl who visits family in Haiti and finds herself through her Haitian auntie’s paintbrush.
The Américas Award encourages and commends authors, illustrators and publishers who produce quality and classroom-ready children’s and young adult books portraying Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinos in the United States.
Book sale and signing will follow.

Each year the Consortium of Latin American Studies Programs (CLASP) and the Hispanic Division celebrates winning titles by holding an award ceremony at the Library of Congress during Hispanic Heritage Month. All are welcome to attend the ceremony and workshop following.

Following the annual awards ceremony, author/artist Duncan Tonatiuh, CLASP, the Learning and Innovation Office, and the Hispanic Division at the Library of Congress offer a hands-on workshop inspired by Tonatiuh’s award winning codex Undocumented: A Worker’s Fight.
Participants will create visual reflections on their own life experiences and combine them in an accordion folded book displayed in the Hispanic Reading Room through Hispanic Heritage Month. This maker opportunity enables participants to experience hybrid reading and writing traditions through Mesoamerican codices and Tonatiuh’s book. A reception, as well as a book sale and signing will follow.
