On the Shelf: Caribbean Collection Items

The Caribbean is a term for the area that comprises nearly twenty-five sovereign territories, overseas departments, and dependencies in the Caribbean Sea basin. The U.N. Statistical Division and the CIA World Factbook recognize the Caribbean as a distinct geographical subregion for statistical and economic purposes.

Historically, the Caribbean has not generated much legal material compared to other regions of the world, but there is a steady stream of regularly published materials from that area that we acquire for the Law Library. Elizabeth Moore in the Global Legal Resource Room maintains the collection and checks the currency of our materials, as well as our legal specialists responsible for the various jurisdictions, and other recommending officers in the Law Library.

Buying trips to the Caribbean tend to rotate among the jurisdictions. For example, a vendor will visit Belize one year and Jamaica the next. Travelling to these far-flung jurisdictions can employ some unique travel methods too. One of our vendors travels via ship to get to a few of the islands; it’s the most cost-effective mode of travel. Recently the Global Legal Resource Room and the Law Library stacks were the beneficiary of some fruitful buying trips in the Caribbean, and we thought we’d highlight a few of those titles that are joining our collection on the shelf.
