Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, has his feast day on the anniversary of his death, March 17. Thanks to the Irish diaspora, “St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in more countries around the world than any other national festival” (Cronin, 242). Originally observed to celebrate Saint Patrick bringing Catholicism to Ireland, it has also morphed into a celebration of pride in Irish heritage and culture. In the United States, ministers from Ireland’s government will be visiting all over the country and the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) will deliver a shamrock (seamróg) to the President, as has been the custom for the past 65 years. In Ireland it is a public holiday, and it is a Bank Holiday in Northern Ireland. However, you would need to take a vacation day to get the day off in the U.S. Anyone can enjoy and relate to the craic that the day’s celebrations provide, even if they’re not a smidgen Irish.
In the past, Kurt, Clare, and Francisco have posted different takes on St. Patrick’s Day as it relates to the law and the Law Library. Since this year’s holiday will fall on a Saturday, we thought we’d start your festive weekend off with a picture of Trinity College Library’s Long Room in Dublin, and a short bibliography list of some Irish law titles, including key materials and some recent acquisitions.
