The 19th Amendment at 100: A Conversation with Judy Perry Martinez

The Law Day theme for this year is “Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Democracy: The 19th Amendment at 100.” In preparation for celebrating Law Day, we were fortunate to host American Bar Association President Judy Perry Martinez in the Library of Congress Jefferson Building on March 11th for a conversation about the legacy of the 19th Amendment with Law Librarian of Congress and Deputy Librarian of Library Collections and Services Jane Sánchez. Jane and Judy discussed the lessons learned from the suffrage movement, and how the work of securing equal rights for women is still a struggle that continues into the present day.

After their conversation, Jane and Judy received a tour of the Library of Congress Suffrage exhibit, “Shall Not Be Denied,” from Janice Ruth, the chief of the Library of Congress Manuscripts Division.

The American Bar Association has created a traveling exhibit to commemorate the 19th amendment and the struggle for its passage titled, “100 Years After the 19th Amendment: Their Legacy, and Our Future.” Be sure to catch the traveling exhibit when it visits a city near you.
