Meet the Remote DRD Interns! (2 of 4)

We hope you enjoyed part one of our four-part mini-bios of our remote interns working on data and creative projects with the Digital Resources Division!

Our interns this summer represented 60 schools from 30 different states or countries.

The University of Washington had the biggest representation with 11 students, followed by San José State University with six, and the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Maryland with four students each. The West Coast was well-represented with 12 students from California and 11 from Washington. The East Coast had the next four spots with nine interns from New York, eight from Virginia, and seven each from Massachusetts and Maryland. We were also well-represented internationally from Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Scotland, and Puerto Rico!

Deanna Fanelli is originally from New Jersey and is currently living in Los Angeles, California. She is a senior at U.C.L.A. studying international development, Spanish, and Geographic Information Systems (G.I.S.), and is very excited to graduate this December! Aside from interning at the Law Library of Congress this summer, she is also working for Strategic Impact Advisors, a women-owned global consulting firm that expands women’s access to digital technologies and finance. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, hiking, and rescuing kittens.

Mia Foucek is a data and creative digital publications intern  at the Law Library and a law student at New York Law School. While pursuing her undergraduate degree at New York University, she lived and studied in the Middle East for a year. Through academic grants, Mia had the opportunity to conduct thesis research in Jordan, as well as the National Archives in Washington, D.C. She also worked for a sports medicine technology company, sparking her interest in data. In her free time, Mia enjoys baseball and Marvel movies.

Keegan Heaney Fredrick is from Spotsylvania, Virginia. As a rising junior at the University of Mary Washington, she currently studies political science and security studies with the goal of attending law school. Keegan enjoys staying politically active, reading, traveling, and doing yoga. She is incredibly passionate about human rights issues and the importance of expanding women’s and the disability community’s rights.

Madeleine Virginia Gannon is currently pursuing her B.A. in art history with concentrations in political science and criminal justice at the University of Michigan. In addition to her studies, she is also an arts writer at The Michigan Daily, an independently funded and student-run newspaper in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In her free time, Madeleine enjoys swing dancing, cooking her family’s traditional Lebanese cuisine, and documenting the street art of her hometown, New York City.

Sophia Guido is a recent graduate from Rutgers University’s master of information program with two concentrations: one in archives and preservation and one in library and information science. Previously, she earned a B.S. at Muhlenberg College with a double major in environmental science and political science. This summer, as an intern at the Law Library of Congress, she is working on a story map and blog posts on Antarctica and the laws/treaties impacting the continent.

Stella Haynes Kiehn (she/her/hers) is a second-year master’s in library and information science student at the University of Washington. She has worked in academic libraries since she was 16 years old, and is currently a communications student specialist for UW Libraries. At the University of Washington, Stella has focused her studies on the intersection of intellectual property rights and archives and is currently looking to further this passion by pursuing a J.D. after graduation. This summer, she is excited to do a deep dive into the history of copyright law as a data and creative digital publications intern at the Law Library of Congress.

Grace Hogan is currently an undergraduate student at The George Washington University where she is pursuing a history major and a minor in anthropology. This summer, she is an intern on the creative projects team, where she has been working on a story map and blog posts about trailblazing women in the legal field in the United States.

Sabrina Holecko lives in Sacramento, California, with her border collie, Quinn. She is a graduate of San Jose State University, earning her master of library and information science degree. While earning her degree, Sabrina worked part-time as a nanny and traveled the world as much as possible before the pandemic. She was part of the student chapter for the Society of American Archivists while in school. Her focus is in archives and records management, and she has worked as an intern at the University of the Pacific, as well as the Center for Sacramento History before joining the Law Library. She enjoys baking when stressed and learning new things, especially different cultural myths and monomyths.

Celine Huang (she/her/hers) is a recent graduate from NYU Shanghai majoring in social science with a focus in political science where she studied abroad in China from August 2017 to December 2019 before studying in New York until graduation. Currently residing in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she is spending her time this summer interning at the Law Library of Congress, working, writing her first novel, and assembling and painting creative 3D printed kits.

Will Jackson is a rising senior at Washington and Lee University from Danville, Virginia. An American history major and Middle Eastern and South Asian studies minor, he is planning to go to law school. Will plays for the Varsity football team and participates in Greek life. His interests include fishing, backpacking, sports, and reading. Will enjoys studying and researching the first 100 years of our nation’s existence.

Jennifer Juang is an incoming student at William & Mary Law School. She is excited to spend this summer learning from the Law Library’s digital collections. Jennifer is a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art and recently completed an AmeriCorps service year in partnership with The Literacy Lab.

Katherine Kelly-Coviello is a junior at the University of Massachusetts Amherst studying anthropology with a concentration in archaeology and cultural heritage. She is currently interning at the Law Library in the data and creative digital publications internship, researching the history of toxic substances. She enjoys visiting museums and libraries in her free time and has been enjoying the challenging but rewarding work of researching and writing for the Library.

Alyssa Key is a recent graduate of San José State University’s master of library and information science (M.L.I.S.) program, with an emphasis on public and academic librarianship. This is her second remote internship with the Law Library after serving as a remote metadata intern this past spring. In addition to her M.L.I.S. degree, Alyssa also holds a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from California State University, Northridge; which she has enjoyed incorporating into her library and information science coursework.

Sean Jay Hyun Kim (he/him) is a senior at American University working towards an environmental studies degree. With this, he has had many unique work experiences from Djing College Radio, to working for a small nongovernmental organization called Emerald Planet. He has also had the opportunity through his schooling to learn about, and do research, on unique topics such as the history of the Potomac River and politics in the developing world, and he also undertook a study abroad program in Seoul, South Korea.

Rachel Star Koladis is working on her M.L.I.S. degree at Southern Connecticut State University. Previously she focused on American studies with a concentration in museums and communities (M.A. from Trinity College) and women’s studies (B.A. from the University of Connecticut). She works as a realtor and teaches yoga. As an intern at the Law Library of Congress, she is researching legislation on the cultivation and use of hemp.

Kate Krause (she/her) is from the Midwest and currently resides in Northeast Ohio.  She is an undergraduate student at the University of Tennessee Knoxville majoring in political science with concentrations in public administration and international relations and minoring in history. She is a proud member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority and the pre-law fraternity Kappa Alpha Pi. In her free time, she loves to travel both internationally and domestically. She has been to some amazing places like Europe, Asia, and Africa, and hopes to continue to travel in the future!

Lauren Krauskopf (she/her) is a rising senior at the University of Maryland, College Park, double majoring in government and politics, and history. Her focuses include American politics and history, and she is currently writing an honors thesis analyzing the FBI’s COINTELPRO operations and its impact on student activism in the 1960s. In addition to working with the Law Library, she has spent this summer interning with a congressman and working at a store in her hometown. She plans on attending law school after she graduates, hopefully in the Washington, D.C., area.

Athena Kwan is an undergraduate from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and currently studying to earn her bachelor’s degree in history. Athena was a participant in the spring 2021 U.C.D.C. study abroad program and a remote research and design intern for the Women’s Federation for World Peace International U.N. office. After graduating, she plans to pursue a master’s degree in library and information science or archival administration. In her spare time, Athena enjoys drawing, reading, and traveling the world.

Truitt Layman is a recent graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a B.A. in political science and a minor in economics. While he was at V.C.U., he worked part-time as a chess coach, volunteered for a handful of political campaigns, and played wheelchair basketball with Sportable. He is currently working as an inside sales representative at Ferguson Enterprises and plans to begin a master’s degree in the spring.

Jacquelyn Leger is currently pursuing her M.L.I.S. degree at the University of Washington while working as the records manager for a community management company in central Florida. She also has a bachelor’s degree in creative writing from the University of Central Florida and a massage license in the state of Florida. Her goal with the M.L.I.S. program is to pursue a career in archives.

Gustave Lester is a doctoral candidate in the department of the history of science at Harvard University. He studies the history of geology, mineral resources, political economy, and colonialism in 18th and 19th-century North America.  In 2020-2021, he was the Friends of the American Philosophical Society Predoctoral Fellow in early American history (to 1840). This summer, he will be conducting archival research for his dissertation as well as research on mineral lands as a remote data and creative digital projects intern at the Law Library of Congress.

Dabney-Holt Linderman (she/her) is a current undergraduate student at Virginia Commonwealth University pursuing a B.A. in history and political science with a concentration in international relations. After completing her undergraduate studies, she plans to attend law school and work in international law. This summer she is working with the Law Library and researching the historical foundations of corporate regulation.
