Foreign Legal Gazette Collections – Winter 2023 Recap

Following our fall recap a few months ago, we have had a busy winter in the Law Library of Congress, celebrating over 10,000 foreign legal gazette issues now online and releasing four more jurisdictions to our foreign legal gazettes collection: Tunisia, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and the Mexican states of Coahuila de Zaragoza, Jalisco, and Colima.

The collection from Tunisia contains nearly 1,000 items. The collection spans the years 2010-2018 and is in French and Arabic.

The Guatemalan collection contains just over 1,000 items and spans the years 2013-2021. The collection from the Dominican Republic is our biggest collection yet, containing 3,349 items. It spans the years 1950-2021. Both collections are in the Spanish language.

Mexico has subnational states that also release gazettes. We have digitized the states of Coahuila de Zaragoza, Jalisco, and Colima, with future plans to release issues from additional Mexican states. The collection includes 2,176 items in the Spanish language from 2005-2021.

This brings our total of gazettes to 15 jurisdictions from all over the world:

From Northern African and Western Asia: Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, and Dubai.

From Eastern and Western Africa: Eritrea, Cabo Verde, and Niger.

From Oceania: New Caledonia and Cook Islands.

From the Americas: Suriname, Venezuela, Paraguay, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic, and the Mexican states of Coahuila de Zaragoza, Jalisco, and Colima.

Our online database and webinar recording are tools to help navigate all of our gazette collections. We are grateful to all of our partners in this project, including our colleagues in the Collections Services Division, Digital Collections Management and Services Division, and the former and recent participants of our Remote Legal Gazette Volunteer/Internship program for working on these jurisdictions and more.
