We wait all year for the weekend of the National Book Festival and it is finally here! Come out to the Walter E. Washington Convention Center located at 801 Allen Y. Lew Place NW in Washington, D.C. The National Book Festival takes place on Saturday, August 24 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with doors opening at 8:30 a.m.. This event is free and open to the public.

Throughout the day, there will be author readings, lectures, signings, various family-friendly activities, and an exhibitor hall featuring different divisions within the Library of Congress. The Law Library of Congress is excited to have a table at this year’s event. We will have staff from the Law Library in various roles at the event all day. We invite you to come to say hi to us and learn about the services that the Law Library of Congress has to offer. Law Library staff will be available starting at 9:00 a.m. in the LC Jefferson area of the expo to answer your questions about our legal research services, collections, and unique expertise in foreign, comparative, and international law. Staff will also discuss our online products such as the Guide to Law Online and the Global Legal Monitor, which covers legal developments and news from around the world.

We will also offer handouts about our various websites, social media outlets, products, and services, along with an overview of our print and digital collections. As always, we will have our popular gavel pencils to give away, in addition to a few other items.

Join Bibliographic and Research Instruction Librarian Barbara Bavis and Legal Reference Librarian Sarah Friedman from the Law Library of Congress to explore the landmark Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education at the Library of Congress Pavilion at 1:00 p.m. located in Hall DE on level 2 of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Discover Library of Congress resources offering invaluable insights into this watershed moment in civil rights history 70 years ago.

Additionally, we are excited to have the winning games from the Friends’ Choice Civics Video Game Challenge available at our table to be played throughout the day. The Video Game Challenge ran from June 2023 until November 2023 with the goal of helping improve public knowledge of civics – that is, the rights and responsibilities of citizens – by asking video game developers to create fun, lightweight video games related to civics that incorporate Library of Congress resources. The winners of the games will be announced at the National Book Festival and the three games will be accessible at our table.

We hope you will visit us for what is sure to be a fun and educational day! For more information about the National Book Festival and to plan your day, visit here.
