The AP covers congressional consideration of a measure to officially recognize the 1507 Waldseemueller Map, which is owned by the Library of Congress and which celebrates its 500th anniversary tomorrow. (This is quite a week for Library of Congress birthdays!) It is the first document of any kind to refer to the Western Hemisphere as “America.”
On the same topic, I expect to have more exciting news about the map very soon.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology is working with the LOC to preserve the Waldseemüller map. If you would like more information, check out NIST’s Tech Beat December 21, 2006 publication.
The Library of Congress is the nation’s oldest federal cultural institution, and it serves as the research arm of Congress.
This is an excellent source of information!
Thank You.
