One Small Dance Step For Man

Share this post:

Forty-one years ago today, astronaut Neil A. Armstrong became the first human being to set foot on the moon. The Apollo 11 broadcast from the moon on July 20, 1969, which transmitted Neil Armstrong’s immortal words,  “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” was named to the National Recording Registry in 2004. Remember one giant leap with James V. Monaco’s “I’ll Sit Right on the Moon.” Its possessive lyrics strike one as a 1912 version of  “Every Breath You Take, ” with an unsettling chorus that promises to use the view from the moon to “see that you won’t flirt.”  Today, let us see the moon not as a perch from which to sow distrust,  but as an object to inspire awe and exploration.  See this and other moon-themed sheet music in Historic Sheet Music, 1800-1922 in the Performing Arts Encyclopedia.
