Amy Tan became an international bestselling author with her first novel, “The Joy Luck Club,” published in 1989. The book was later adapted into a hit film, co-written by Tan. She has since gone on to write several other best-selling novels.

The author came to the Main Stage of the 2018 Library of Congress National Book Festival to discuss her latest work, “Where the Past Begins: A Writer’s Memoir.” She told her interviewer, Library of Congress Literary Director Marie Arana, that when she wrote the smashingly successful “The Joy Luck Club,” “I thought: No one is going to get this book.” Q&A begins at 45:30.

The 2020 Library of Congress National Book Festival will celebrate its 20th birthday this year.
