A Blast of Brass!

Last year we discussed method books available from the NLS Music collection for most band and orchestra instruments. We’ve even done some posts on specific instruments, like saxophone and violin. Today, though, I decided to focus a post specifically on brass instruments. “Why brass?” you ask. Well for one, brass instruments are near and dear to my heart, being a trombone player myself! But also because today happens to be the birthday of Gordon Jacob: a composer who wrote many pieces for brass instruments, including a Concerto for Trombone (BRM24877), Concerto for Horn and Strings, and his Scherzo for Two Trumpets, Horn, and Trombone.

Although the only brass composition we have by Gordon Jacob in the collection is the Concerto for Trombone, I’d like to highlight some other more advanced solo or chamber brass works in the collection.
