New BARD Additions: September 2021

Share this post:

Happy fall season to everyone! BARD’s September additions include brand new transcriptions of Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong songbooks, which include “What a Wonderful World,” and “Cheek to Cheek.” Love that type of music? Then also grab the piano version of Leonello Casucci’s “Just a Gigolo.” Need to learn some basics first? Check out the new piano scores and instructional band instrument method books! Or explore popular songs by Taylor Swift and songs used in the movie “Once,” which the Marrakesh Treaty exchange allowed us to add. If you need a refresher on how to download music materials from BARD, this NLS website may be helpful. Please contact us if you would like additional information or if you prefer to receive a hard copy score or digital talking book cartridge. Music Appreciation

Bluegrass from the Blue Ridge. A Half Century of Change. Grayson and Carroll Counties Iie to the west of the Blue Ridge, deep in the mountain country of southwestern Virginia. An unusually large variety of traditional music has survived in this sparsely populated region, and in the last two decades many examples of this music have been recorded in the field and are now available on records or in books of traditional Southern Appalachian songs. Folkways Records. (DBM03994)

Classic Appalachian Blues. The “mountain cousin” of the Delta blues, Appalachian blues bears the stamp of a distinctive regional blend of European and African styles and sounds born at the cultural crossroads of railroad camps, mines, and rural settlements. Drawn from deep within the Folkways collection and from historic live recordings at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, the music of bedrock blues performers such as Pink Anderson, Lesley Riddle, Etta Baker, John Jackson, and Doc Watson shines bright, claiming Appalachia as a key cradle of American acoustic blues. Smithsonian Folkways Recording. (DBM03991)

Classic Banjo. The banjo is a “bigger than life” instrument, a symbol of deep southern American heritage. At the same time, beneath its veneer of old-time icon, the story of the banjo is one of enormous creativity and adaptation to many musical traditions around the world—from Africa, to the Caribbean, to North America, to Europe, and beyond. In Classic Banjo from Smithsonian Folkways, banjo connoisseurs Greg Adams and Jeff Place cull 30 gems of banjo artistry from more than 300 albums in the Folkways collections, offering a gateway into the deep and varied veins of banjo history. Smithsonian Folkways Recording. (DBM03992)

Old Time Country Music. This record is a result of continuing efforts to record an LP of old-time music started in 1957. One double recording from 1957, East Virginia, was used on the first New Lost City Ramblers record in late 1958, as were several of the songs: Old Fish Song, Colored Aristocracy, Roving Gambler, It’s a Shame to Whip Your Wife on Sunday, Sailor on the Deep Blue Sea, and (on Vol. 3) Johnson Boys. Smithsonian Folkways Recording. (DBM03995)

Jazz of the Forties. Vol. 1, Jazz at Town Hall. Recorded at New York’s famed venue Town Hall in 1946, this album features two bands’ worth of fabulous jazz musicians, including Sidney Bechet, Baby Dodds, Pops Foster, James P. Johnson, Pee Wee Russell, and Muggzy Spanier. Folkways Records. (DBM03986)
