New BARD Additions: December 2021

Share this post:

Happy Holidays from the NLS Music Section! Our wonderful team has continued to add new materials to BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download), and we are so excited to share this month’s latest offerings with you! Whether it’s materials acquired via the Marrakesh Treaty, talking books we’ve produced featuring our very own NLS narrators, new transcriptions we have received, or braille scores digitized from our collection, we have a musical feast to offer for the month of December.

This month we have added more lectures and panel discussions from the Library’s Music Division to our talking book collection and more music appreciation content from Smithsonian Folkways. From our braille collection, we have recently digitized more music from the Beatles, as well as brass sextet arrangements of music from My Fair Lady, Kurt Weill’s Knickerbocker Holiday, and a selection from the musical play Great Day. Via the Marrakesh Treaty, we have added a wealth of piano music from the Royal Conservatory’s Celebration Series.

All of our materials on BARD are also available on digital cartridge or in hard copy as braille music. If you prefer to borrow the materials listed below through the mail, please contact the Music Section. You can call us at 1-800-424-8567, or e-mail us at [email protected].

Charles Griffes Rediscovered. David Plylar discusses the Library’s collection of holograph manuscripts by composer Charles Griffes. This includes a “rediscovered” transcription by Griffes of “Les parfums de la nuit” from the Iberia section of “Images” by Claude Debussy. Solungga Liu’s performance at the Library of November 4, 2017, is believed to be the world premiere of this transcription. The sheet music for this transcription, prepared by Plylar, is available for free download on the Library’s “In the Muse” blog. (DBM04409)

Classic Folk Music: from Smithsonian Folkways. We often take for granted the supremacy of artists such as Doc Watson, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Lead Belly, Big Bill Broonzy, Brownie McGhee, and other folk music legends. Classic Folk sheds new light on the success of the urban intellectual-driven movement that made rural white and African-American artists and their music favorites of audiences everywhere. This recording features classic performances by classic artists doing some of their classic songs during the great folksong revival of the 1940s through 1960s. It features some of the great performances from the vaults of Folkways Records. Compiled and annotated by Jeff Place. (DBM03999)

A Conversation with Allen Toussaint and Larry Appelbaum. Prior to a concert by Allen Toussaint and Henry Butler at the Library of Congress, Toussaint sat for an interview with Larry Appelbaum about his hit records, life in the recording studios, the New Orleans piano tradition, Professor Longhair, the challenges of songwriting and producing and the impact of Hurricane Katrina. Larry Appelbaum is a music specialist at the Library of Congress. (DBM04407)

Folksongs and Ballads of Virginia. Sung by Paul Clayton. Massachusetts native Paul Clayton spent his college years at the University of Virginia collecting songs and writing a thesis about Child ballads found in the state. Clayton selected these songs from his own fieldwork recordings, and Kenny Goldstein supplies the album’s extensive liner notes. (DBM03997)

Kilby Snow: Country Songs and Tunes with Autoharp. Recorded, edited and annotated by Mike Seeger. Recorded over three days on the stage of an auditorium near Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, Kilby Snow sings and plays autoharp on this 1969 Folkways release. Snow began playing the autoharp at just three years old. By the time he was five, he won first prize of $20 in gold at a fiddler’s convention. Liner notes include an introductory essay by Snow as well as notes on a number of the album’s songs. (DBM03998)

Liszt’s Historical Hungarian Portraits. David Plylar speaks about Franz Liszt’s Historical Hungarian Portraits and the Library of Congress’ primary sources related to the work. A performance of each movement from the work is included, alongside readings of alternative passages and related works by Mosonyi and Liszt. Discussion and alternative passages precede the performance of each movement. David Plylar is a composer, pianist and music specialist in the music division of the Library of Congress. (DBM04406)

Music in America’s Radio Propaganda in Korea. In an American Musicological Society Lecture, Hye-jung Park considers the use of American music in wartime radio propaganda on the Korean peninsula. The talk focuses on Korean perceptions of American and Korean music vis-à-vis the cultural hierarchies in Eastern Asia during the period of change during and following World War II. Much of the research for this lecture is based on the recorded sound collection from the US Office of War Information (1942-45) at the Library of Congress. (DBM04408)

The Original James P. Johnson: 1942-1945 Piano Solos. Whether he played his original compositions, as on side one, or whether he interpreted other composer’s works, as on side two, James Price Johnson was an original. We are extremely fortunate that these heretofore unknown sides have come to light. Recorded within a two year span – 1943-1945 – these sixteen selections present one of the greatest jazzmen in a relaxed mood of musical maturity. (DBM03993)

Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock ‘n’ Roll. Cultural historian and author Peter Guralnick spoke with art journalist Geoffrey Himes about his latest book, a biography of Sam Phillips, a pivotal figure in the history of 20th-century American music of many stripes. Owner of the small but powerful Sun Records Label in Memphis, Phillips was a major force in kick-starting the careers of Howlin’ Wolf, Johnny Cash, Ike Turner, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley, among others.
