New BARD Additions: August 2021

This month, the NLS Music Section has added many new talking books and braille scores to BARD (Braille and Audio Reading Download), including songs by Johnny Cash, Adele, and Broadway’s Robert Lopez! We have continued to add to our digital holdings through digitization, acquiring new transcriptions, and the implementation of the Marrakesh Treaty. There are more piano lessons from Bill Brown, new transcriptions of the Tradition of Excellence concert band method, and new offerings from the Smithsonian Folkways Collection.

If you wish to borrow any of the items listed in this post, feel free to download them from BARD directly to your smart device. To borrow hard copies of braille music or talking books on digital cartridge, give us a call us at 1-800-424-8567 extension 2, or e-mail us at [email protected] If you need any assistance with BARD, you can call or email us, or consult the following links: Braille and Audio Reading Download (BARD) and BARD Access.

Music Appreciation

Alonzo Cruz: The Blind Troubador Of Oaxaca. “The incredibly pure voice of Alonzo transformed that afternoon from one of casual listening to the making of this record. It was as if the sweeping romanticism of the blind troubadour of Oaxaca summed up the troubadour tradition of all places, and of Latin settings in particular. Whatever his song, folk or popular, it becomes a serenade as would be sung to the ‘beautiful woman behind the latticed window.'” (DBM04094)

Cajun Social Music. “Of the Louisiana French, the Acadians form the most homogeneous group in the southwestern part of the state. Approximately four thousand settled in the Attakapas country, along the Bayou Teche, and Lafourche and Vermilion bayous, coming in small groups over a thirty-year period after the English dispersion of their Canadian settlement in 1755. Their descendants, who call themselves Cajuns, remain to a large extent an agricultural people who hold tenaciously to their ways. They quickly absorb, it seems, nearly every alien who comes in contact with them. Like the land, they are prolific.” (DBM04063)

Gazette: with Pete Seeger, with Banjo and 12-String Guitar. “Pete Seeger tries to show that American folk music is still a living, vital, creative force in our lives — and can be as much a reflection of the present as of the past” — Publisher’s note. (DBM03651)

Jean Ritchie and Doc Watson at Folk City. “It could only have happened in real life, this mixing of two Appalachian family musical traditions on the stage of a hip Greenwich Village nightclub before an audience of fad-following New Yorkers. Nothing that improbable is allowed in fiction. The idea could only have come from folklorist Ralph Rinzler. Doc Watson and Jean Ritchie had never heard of each other until Rinzler introduced them. Jean was well launched as a professional in the incipient folksong revival, what has been called ‘the great folk scare of the sixties.’ It was a world Doc Watson was about to enter.” (DBM04062)

A Night at the Tropicoro. “Nightclubs are no better than their music, and the music in the Tropicoro is the best in Puerto Rico, swung by Lito Peña’s Orquesta Panamericana. Young señor Peña comes from one of the island’s oldest musical families, and three of his four musician brothers play in the band on this record. The lineup consists of four trumpets (one doubling the alto-voiced flugelhorn) and four saxophones in addition to the augmented rhythm section (traps, conga and bongo drums plus an assortment of rattling and scratching instruments) demanded by complex Latin rhythms. It is the largest name band on the island.” (DBM04091)

The Voice Of Mexico: From Monterrey, The Classical Guitar Of Gustavo Zepoll ; From Mexico City, The Trio Leones, Three Guitars, Three Voices Singing Lovers Legends From The Provinces Of Mexico. Performed by Gustavo Zepoll and Trio Leones. (DBM04096)

Progress around the World in Braille Music

People and music are everywhere. Written music is an international language, including braille music notation. Stevie Wonder, Braille, and Accessibility

A couple of weeks ago, one of my colleagues here at NLS, David Fernandez-Barrial, asked me if I had seen the Grammy award ceremony (which took place Monday, February 15, 2016). I had to admit I hadn’t; I was, uh, practicing my Hindemith songs. Well, it turns out that Stevie Wonder, one of the presenters at […]
