Photo Blog #12: Reel Mysteries

Share this post:

This time in the Library’s ongoing series of “mystery stills,” we return to what are probably film stills from some very obscure films.  We welcome your assistance in telling us the titles or any of the performers pictured.  As always, “clicking” on any of the images below will increase their size.  As we verify the suggestions we get, we will update this blog accordingly.  Many thanks!

881.  We don’t know either man or the movie they are acting in regarding this still.  This photo does have a small code printed in its corner; it reads “AV-6.”

SOLVED!:  “L’Aventure est au coin de la rue'” (1944) with Charles Rigoulot and Roland Toutain.  Merci!

2.  We just missed Halloween as far as identifying this mother-daughter (?) duo.  This shot is probably from a TV title–a horror show or anthology–and probably dates from the 1980’s or ’90s.

SOLVED!:  “Children of the Night” (1991)

3.  Probably another horror film.  A copy of this print is currently being sold on eBay but the seller of it doesn’t know the film it is from either.  This still also bears a code:  “F-68.”

SOLVED!:  “Child Bride” (1938)!  Thanks Miles!

314.  This is a striking shot.  The question is:  is it from a fashion shoot, a film or maybe even a music video?

SOLVED!:  Neil McDonough in “White Dwarf,” a 1995 sci-fi pilot.

495.  We don’t know this pair either.  Is this from a film or perhaps they are a musical duo?

UPDATE:  Wendy & Lisa?  Bauhaus?  Love & Rockets?

6.  Who is the man on the phone?  It too has a cryptic code:  “1171.”

SOLVED!:  Don Terry

7.  This still is extracted from a larger composite of snow-bound stills.  But who is this couple and what are they shooting?

SOLVED!:  Sharon Gabet and Larkin Malloy, “The Edge of Night.”  Thanks Ellie!

8.  This lady seems to be part of an opera.  We’d appreciate either her name or the production she is in.

SOLVED!:  Eleanor Wold in Gilbert & Sullivan’s “Patience” on the NY stage in 1973! — Thanks Loom!

9.  This sepia-tone photo might be from a silent western, but we aren’t sure.

SOLVED!:  “Desert Rider” from 1929.  Thanks Mary!

Please be sure to review our previous posts where various other stills are still waiting identification.

  1. I don’t know why it would be him, but the guy on the phone looks kinda like Tex Beneke to me. It’s probably not though? Hmph.

  2. Man on the Phone, #6, looks like Fred McMurray to me.

  3. If I’m reading the code right, #9 is from the 1929 MGM film, Desert Rider. It looks like it says 404.

  4. For #9, that would be Bert Roach and Edward Connelly in the wagon.

  5. #7 The couple in San Moritz is a scene from the soap “The Edge of Night” during the early 1980s. The actors are Sharon Gabet and Larkin Malloy, who played Raven & Sky Whitney. No guessing here. I recognized them immediately. Loved them back in the day.

  6. Two more votes for Fred McMurray as the man on the phone in photo #6.

  7. Picture #7 This snowbound couple is Sharon Gabet and Larkin Malloy From one of scenes from “The Edge of Night.” It was some time in the early to mid 80’s.

I’m thinking it is most likely the episodes when the character of Raven, and her then husband whom everyone assumes is Schuyler Whitney, is in fact a man named Jefferson Brown. Pretty sure the photo was not long before the real Schuyler Whitney or someone he is with, kills Jefferson Brown, because he is about to kill Raven. She had no idea she was in danger, just her husband was killed. She learns this fact some time later, when the real Schuyler Whitney comes into her life.

And just a sad note, I just learned Larkin Malloy had a heart attack on his birthday this past September and died 3 or 4 days later from complications from the heart attack.

  8. #8 has the look of a Gilbert & Sullivan opera to me.

  9. Photo no. 3 is from “Child Bride”, a 1938 exploitation film that was shown on TCM a few years ago. In this scene, the schoolteacher, played by actress Diana Durrell in her one and only movie, is pulled from her home in the middle of the night by hooded hillbillies. Just as she is about to be tortured, she is saved by some good hillbillies with a shotgun. A rather bad copy can be found on YouTube.

  10. Hello I’m french and the actor with the hands up on photo #1 is Roland Toutain who was in Jean Renoir’s “La Règle du Jeu”, but I’ve no idea of which film is this one…

  11. #5. Members of Bauhaus, some of which became Tones on Tail, and then Love and Rockets? The guy on the left, tipping his glasses down, bears some resemblance to Daniel Ash, I think.

Big hair and sunglasses: so many possibilities.

  12. Hi, about the phoro #1, according to Groucho Marx on the DVDCLASSIK forum, it could be a french film from 1944 “L’Aventure est au coin de la rue” (Jacques Daniel-Norman ), the actor with the hat could be wrestler-actor Charles Rigoulot…

  13. Following up on suggestion that #8 is from a Gilbert & Sullivan opera, perhaps Patricia Kern or Heather Begg from the BBC TV movie of Iolanthe (1964)?

  14. The actor on the phone in #6 is definitely Don Terry, sometime in the thirties.

  15. #6 might be a publicity still of Don Terry from “Tight Shoes,” 1941.

  16. Number 4 bears an uncanny resemblance to a scene in an old Duran Duran music video, including the faces projected onto the woman’s hair.
