This coming weekend at the Packard Campus Theater (19053 Mt. Pony Road / Culpeper, VA)

Strap on your fedora and brace yourself for a smoky room.  This month the Library of Congress Packard Campus looks a noir films, specifically those set in that notorious city of angels, Los Angeles.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2022 @ 7:30pm

The Player (Warner Bros., 1992)

L.A. Noir is about the city’s underbelly…and where better to start than at a movie studio?  Tim Robbins stars and Robert Altman directs.  The star studded cast also includes Whoopi Goldberg, Peter Gallagher, Fred Ward, Richard E. Grant and Dina Merrill.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 2022 @ 2pm

The Big Sleep (Warner Bros., 1946)

Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall star in this film based on the book by Raymond Chandler.  Perhaps the quintessential L.A. Noir film.  “The Big Sleep” was added to the Library’s National Film Registry in 1997.

Harper (Warner Bros., 1966)

A different detective, the same city.  Paul Newman stars in what he called “A Bogie kind of film.”  Also in the cast:  Julie Harris, Janet Leigh, Robert Wagner, and Shelley Winters.  Then to make it a true Bogie homage, Lauren Bacall appears in a pivotal supporting role.
