This coming weekend at the Packard Campus Theater (19053 Mt. Pony Road / Culpeper, VA)

Our trip through the seedier side of Los Angeles ends this weekend with a more recent classic of the L.A. noir sub-genre and an all-star animated cast who find themselves embroiled in some shady and shadowing dealings.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2022 @ 2:00pm

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (Disney, 1988)

Funny–even one might say, cartoonish–take on the City of Angels.  Between laughs, pay attention to the story and the style.  It is absolutely L.A. noir and features of Who’s Who of our animated history.  This film was added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2016.  To learn more about it, see this essay by the Library’s own Alexis Ainsworth.

(Color; 104 minutes; rated PG-13)

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2022 @ 7:30pm

Chinatown (Paramount, 1974)

Jack Nicholson brings a rightful conclusion to our look at L.A. Noir.  P.I. Jack Gittes uncovers coorption dealing with California’s most sought after commodity…water.  Also in this film directed by Roman Polanksi, Faye Dunaway, Burt Young and John Huston.  “Chinatown” was added to the National Film Registry in 1991.

To learn more about this film, see this essay on it by James Verniere.

(Color; 131 minutes; rated R)
