Deadline Approaching for the 2024 National Film Registry

Share this post:

The Library of Congress invites you to submit for the 2024 National Film Registry. The deadline is August 15, 2024, and any nominations made after the deadline will be considered for the 2025 National Film Registry. You may nominate up to 50 films through the online nomination form.

Under the terms of the National Film Preservation Act of 1988, the Librarian of Congress can only select 25 titles annually that are deemed “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant, are at least 10 years old, and extant (meaning they must exist).

One of the most important voices, and one that is of great value to the Librarian, is yours. Public nominations play a key role when discussing and reviewing films for consideration. We should mention that this is not a popularity contest, although a lot of blockbusters are on the list. This is about films that are important to our American heritage, history, culture, and are deemed worthy of preservation.

There are currently 875 films on the National Film Registry, and if you need inspiration or quick reference, here is a list of some films not yet on the registry.

Make sure to get your 2024 nominations in by August 15—only one week left.”  Have fun!
