Here Comes the Sun

My latest Flickr album – Toni Frissell – The Great Outdoors – showcases the photographer’s work in and with nature. Let’s focus on a few images that feature the sun or spotlight its effects.

This photo from 1960 shows the sun rising over a mist-covered racetrack in Saratoga Springs, New York:

The sunlight dapples the water in Maine in this photo from an unpublished shoot for Sports Illustrated magazine:

The sun frames these shadowy surfers in orange and purple hues as they catch waves in Hawaii:

Who doesn’t enjoy soaking up the sun’s warmth as Didi Abreu (Mary Sargent Ladd d’Anglejanis) is doing in Switzerland in 1967?

In November of 1959, “The Sound of Music” opened on Broadway. In August of that year, Mary Martin traveled to Vermont to meet Maria von Trapp, who she would soon play. The sun wonderfully highlights the two women and the von Trapp grandchildren:

This is a very small sampling of Frissell’s sun-drenched work in the open air.
