On The Ice

I’d like to share an image that I didn’t use for my latest Flickr album – On the Ice.

The photo is from the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information Collection (FSA/OWI) and was retrieved when I searched in the Prints and Photographs Online Catalog (PPOC) using the search term “skating”:

At first glance, it may not be easy to see what is going on in the photo taken in February of 1942 by John Vachon in the vicinity of Lake City, Minnesota. That’s why I didn’t include it in the Flickr album.

This detail will help you see what is happening – five kids and a dog are playing on the ice of the Mississippi River:
