Get to Know Library of Congress Research Guides

The Library of Congress website is a vast trove of possibilities. Its vastness can be exciting! But sometimes it can be difficult for searchers to find exactly the information they’re looking. Expert reference staff from the Library have created a number of resources to help people find the material they want, including subject-specific research guides.

The research guides, created by subject specialists at the Library, address a variety of topics.

  • Want help searching Chronicling America? This guide will provide assistance plus topic guides on more than four hundred subjects.
  • Do your students need help with research? There is a guide with tips to help students get comfortable doing research at the Library and other repositories.
  • Looking for information on Jamestown and Roanoke? There’s a guide for that too.
  • Conducting local history research? Staff from the Main Reading Room have created guides on the states. Need even more? The American Folklife Center offers guides focusing on folklore and other historical activities in the states.
  • Interested in the origins of children’s games? There’s a guide for that too.

You can browse specific guides by subject or by research center or search using key words or phrases to see if there is a guide on your topic. If you still don’t find what you’re looking for, you can also use the Ask a Librarian service to ask for help.

Explore this collection of guides! They can help you and your students maneuver through the Library’s online collections and become comfortable with what’s available online.
