Apply now to join us onsite at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., for a 3-day free professional development workshop where you’ll learn and practice strategies for using primary sources with K-12 students. Two sessions will be held next summer:
- July 9-11, 2025
- July 16-18, 2025
Note: These onsite events are subject to change or cancellation as circumstances require.
Educators of all disciplines are invited to apply! We will discuss resources and strategies to effectively integrate primary sources into K-12 classroom teaching. Each session will focus on pedagogy, with an emphasis on supporting student engagement, critical thinking, and construction of knowledge.
While practicing these teaching strategies, attendees will explore some of the millions of digitized historical artifacts and documents available in the Library’s collections. They will also conduct research to identify primary sources and develop an activity related to their classroom content.
The institute and instructional materials are provided at no cost. Participants will be responsible for transportation to and from Washington, D.C., as well as any required overnight accommodations. Upon successful completion of the workshop, participants will receive a certificate for 30 hours of professional development.
The application deadline is Friday, January 31, 2025. All applications require a letter of recommendation.

Can university lecturer participate this?
Yes faculty members from colleges and universities can participate in the summer professional development program.
I would love this opportunity.
This would be an exciting training.
Can Public Library workers attend this?
While the event is intended for K-12 educators, we would happily consider an application from a public library worker, Jessica. Thanks for your interest.
Could a teacher-candidate university student participate in this professional development? I am enrolled as a sophomore student at an accredited four year university dual-majoring in secondary education and history currently. If not, hoping to participate as an educator in the future !
Hi Marie,
You are certainly welcome to apply! It is a competitive application, so we cannot guarantee that you would get in, but we would not disqualify based on your status as a student.
Thanks for your interest!
