This week is National Engineers Week (February 16-22, 2025). In 1951, the National Society of Professional Engineers established National Engineers Week to celebrate achievements in engineering and encourage people to pursue careers in the field. The society designated the week to include February 22, President George Washington’s birthday. George Washington is considered one of the United State’s first engineers for his work as a surveyor. To learn more about George Washington as a surveyor, explore the George Washington Papers Collection article, “Washington as Public Land Surveyor” and for a short history of Washington’s engineering achievements check out “Washington: Engineer and Engineers Advocate” by John R. Boule II, 2003 (ADA596623).

Interested in learning more about the history of engineering and its disciplines? Check out the Science Section’s research guide, Engineering in History. Are you a student considering studying engineering or an educator looking for ways to incorporate engineering into your lessons? See our research guide, Engineering Resources for Students and Educators. Both guides include print and digital resources to help you learn more about engineering topics. If you have any questions or need any assistance using these guides, please use our Ask a Librarian.

George Washington’s ca.1748 survey map of Alexandria, Virginia. The site map displays a simple outline of the future town and shows the location of existing structures such as a tobacco-inspection warehouse and includes notes on the land within the proposed town limits indicating its suitability for use. The map also provides soundings and shoal locations in the Potomac river.
